Sell my timeshare. That’s a common demand from a lot of owners nationwide. Can I sell my timeshare? That’s the next piece to that conversion.
Short answer? Yes. You can sell your timeshare. Realistic? Minimal.
We understand that may sound bias coming from a company that offers a paid service to individuals who’re wanting out of their timeshare, but we want to keep it realistic. So, let us explain.
Anyone that has tried selling their timeshare before knows this is true.
Whether you’ve tried selling it before by yourself or paid a listing company to “sell” it for you…You know what we’re talking about.
Now, we’d like to make it blatantly clear that if you’re the owner of a highly sought after week/resort and or own during the right season or point package you have a much higher chance at being able to sell your timeshare on the resale market.
HOWEVER, most people think their timeshare ownership is rare or worth more than it actually is. In most cases, an owners perception is much more far off than they’d ever imagined. This also applies to most individuals who’ve paid $20,000, $50,000, $100,000+ for their timeshare.
When they go to the resale market, they find the hard truth that if by chance they can sell it…their timeshare ownership will sell for pennies on the dollar compared to what they paid the resort originally. That’s not even counting the years of maintenance fees they’ve spent on top of the timeshare’s initial cost.
To show you this post wasn’t written to strickly discourage you from trying to sell it we’re going to tell you the best ways to go about selling it.
Rule #1: NEVER. NEVER EVER…Pay someone upfront money to sell your timeshare.
If any particular company is so sure they can sell your timeshare ownership, they shouldn’t have any issue being paid like a real estate agent. Do you pay a real estate agent before he sells your home? No. So why would you do this for someone who claims they can sell your timeshare?
If a company or individual offers to sell your timeshare and accepts to only be paid on the backend after the deal is done…great. If that’s a choice you’re offered, and you’ve got nothing to lose…That’s an option. However, we’ve never seen or heard of ANY company that will do this.
If you’ve found one, please, comment or send us a message with a link to their website, we’d love to dig deeper.
Option #1: Listing Sites
Listing sites can be anything from timeshare forums to sites like eBay & Craigslist. Another good option is to join Facebook groups that are timeshare related.
These groups typically contain individuals that are actively conversing & sharing their experience with their timeshare ownership. If you join these groups, you can possibly (depending on group rules) make an ad offering your timeshare ownership for the amount you’re looking for.
Option #2: Hire An Agency
If you’ve tried all the “free-routes” of getting your ad listing out there to potential buyers and received no bites you can consider hiring an agency.
REMEMBER, as we stated in Rule #1 above…DO NOT hire an agency/company that wants money upfront to sell a timeshare. This option most likely will never work out well for you or your wallet.
The downside to hiring these types of companies is 1) We’ve never heard of a legitimate one that will actually do what they say. 2) We’ve not found a single one yet that will only take payment after.
In the case, you do find a real estate broker or company that will take payment after the sale is made your only downside is that you’ll lose a percentage of whatever money you do get back.
Once again, that’s IF it gets sold.
Option #3: Call The Resort
If you’ve exhausted the options listed above and may have tried many more you’ve come up with on your own…This is a last-ditch effort.
Call the resort you own your timeshare ownership with and ask them if they’d like to buy it back from you.
Heads up, this is super super super unlikely so please don’t hold our feet to the fire for suggesting this but it’s worth a try.
